Since its inception 13 years ago the Nelson Farmers’ Market has grown from strength to strength and become a much-loved part of the lives of locals in the Nelson region.
While farmers’ markets have always been present in Nelson’s wider community, the Nelson Farmers’ Market has brought about new opportunities for producers, local business and Nelson residents, by making seasonal, local produce even more accessible through its central location and mid-week market day.
The Nelson Farmers’ Market is owner operated and currently managed by Miriam Clark. Since Miriam came on board 2 years ago, she has seen the market grow and adapt to changing demands including the growth of organically certified produce and products such as organic kombucha.
The knowledge of our foods journey, from ground-to-plate, is becoming increasingly important to consumers particularly to those suffering from allergies or whose beliefs and lifestyle affect their food choices. The Nelson Farmers’ Market gives Nelson residents and local business the opportunity to meet growers and producers face to face, learn about their products first hand and even procure speciality products made to order on both small and larger scales.
Regular visitors of the Nelson Farmers’ Market will notice natural ebbs and flows of the produce as the season’s change. In summer you will find a market bursting to the brim with fruit and summer salad ingredients. In winter there are more hearty vegetables, less fruit and more preserves. This seasonal food cycle aligns strongly with our internal body clock and cravings. Think about it, in summer when we are outside enjoying the sun we don’t crave soups and roasts, our bodies generally tell us that we want light nutritious food e.g. salads and fruit. Likewise when the cooler months hit our bodies start to tell us it’s time to give salads a rest and start feeding on hearty soups.
The Nelson Farmers’ Market really is a one-stop shop for any local business or resident seeking local, seasonal produce straight from its source. Held every Wednesday from 8-2pm, rain or shine on Maitai Boulevard off Paru Paru Road, it’s the perfect mid-week outing to fill your cupboards.
