What is an Acai Bowl?
Acai bowls are a food trend that has taken the world by storm. However, many of us still don’t know exactly what they are or where they came from. In this article, we are going to take a look at the acai bowl trend and where it came from and what it is. Acai bowls are usually heralded as a breakfast food and a superfood.
When you are served up an acai bowl, you may think someone served you ice cream or a smoothie by accident. However, it is exactly the health food that you ordered. An acai bowl is basically a very thick smoothie made up of the acai berry – which we will take an independent look at momentarily.
It isn’t just a smoothie, though. Usually, these delicious bowls are topped with oats, peanut butter or even other fruits. Since they depend heavily on fruit, these are also a great, healthy way to help with a sweet tooth that needs satisfaction.
The thickness of the mixture is crucial. If it is the consistency of a regular smoothie, you won’t be able to get a good spoonful like you are meant to when you scoop it. However, if it’s too thick, it won’t get that good, creamy consistency that an acai bowl is meant to have.
What is an Acai Berry?
Before you jump right into what an acai bowl is, though, you probably want to know what an acai berry is. Well, the berries themselves come from Brazil mainly. They are about the size of a grape and dark in color when they are harvested.
These berries don’t grow on a bush like most, though.
Rather, they grow on palm trees in groups as small as three or as large as a dozen at the base of the leaves.
These berries have a tarter flavor as well. Many would describe it close to a blackberry or raspberry rather than a sweeter berry like a blueberry. Some have even likened its taste to that of dark chocolate. Whatever it tastes like to you, you can expect a rich, tropical fruit when you taste an acai berry.
Where did the Acai Bowl trend start?
The trend of acai bowls comes from South America – Brazil, to be exact. This is where the fruit comes from, after all. Generally In New Zealand, we don’t receive the berry in it’s whole, fruit form. Instead, we receive it already pureed.
This also explains why our acai bowls come only in smoothie form. We don’t receive the berry in its whole form. However, what we top our bowls with varies from place to place and even person to person.
What are the health benefits of the Acai Berry?
You can also use these berries to help with weight loss. This works in two different ways. First, as we went over, it helps to satisfy a sweet tooth without buying into sugar or sweets. However, it is also proven that acai berries can help to break down fat deposits in the body.
Digestion is helped as well. Acai berries have strong detoxification qualities. In fact, many berries do as well, so if you top your acai bowl right, you can multiply this effect.
Skin health is another benefit. Rather than eating the berries, though, many cosmetic companies put them in their face wash for direct use. Eating them, though, can still help to give your skin a healthy glow.
This healthy glow also helps you to look younger. That is due to phytochemicals in the berry that help to slow and even reverse the aging process.
Respiratory distress can also be decreased with the use of acai berries. In fact, you can boost your immune system in general with the consumption of acai berries or acai bowls.
Finally, you can use acai berries and acai bowls to increase your energy and libido. This is in part thanks to the increased circulation that these berries offer.
Acai bowls are far more than just delicious. They can offer you more than just a delicious snack, though. In addition, there are a variety of health benefits that you can reap from the
